Professional Background
Paul began his working life as a farmer and, after nearly 20 years, pursued the study of law as a career change. He continues to help operate the family farm. His rural background, together with more than 50 years of experience operating his own businesses, has given him a practical understanding of the challenges faced by business owners, municipalities, landowners, and particularly rural clients.
Called to the Bar in 1992 at the age of 41, Paul has spent more than 30 years building a practice throughout Essex-Windsor, Chatham-Kent, and well beyond. In his specialized practice under the Drainage Act, he has represented municipalities and property owners across Ontario before the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal, the Ontario Drainage Referee, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Divisional Court. His business and rural experience has also contributed to his expertise in land use planning law, municipal law, and real property law, particularly as those areas affect owners of rural land.
Community Involvement
Paul served for 12 years as a member of Municipal Council for Tilbury North Township, now part of the Municipality of Lakeshore, including six years as Reeve, or mayor. He also served for nine years on Essex County Council. Through that public service, he gained extensive experience managing organizations, working with people, and resolving a wide variety of practical problems.
Outside the office, Paul continues to enjoy farming and has a strong interest in local history, including the restoration of two log homes. He volunteers with numerous organizations and associations as a way of contributing to the community that he and his ancestors have called home for well over a century.
